The Anambra State Police Command has acknowledged operational lapses that led to the escape of two suspects involved in the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the State House of Assembly.
The decomposing body of Azuka was discovered at the Second Niger Bridge, prompting multiple arrests. However, public outrage followed revelations that two key suspects, including the alleged shooter, had escaped from police custody.
In a statement from Awka, State Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga admitted to the failure and assured the public of intensified efforts to re-arrest the fugitives.
“The command will not rest until the fleeing suspects are re-arrested and all those involved are brought to justice,” Ikenga said, pledging transparency and regular updates to the public.
He also called for restraint in public commentary to avoid inciting tensions, emphasizing the need for an impartial investigation that upholds justice.
The police have vowed to address security lapses and implement measures to prevent future incidents, as concerns grow over safety and accountability within the state’s law enforcement.
