ABUJA: The All Progressives Congress (APC) has predicted that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will face electoral defeat in 2027 due to its handling of the Kano Emirate crisis. APC’s State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, stated on Monday in Abuja that the issue would negatively impact NNPP’s electoral prospects rather than President Bola Tinubu’s chances.
Abbas argued that NNPP’s presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, lacks the national appeal necessary to win the presidency. He claimed that the APC is now more united and popular and expects to perform significantly better in the next election due to the failures of the current administration in Kano.
Contradicting NNPP’s Kano State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, who suggested that the emirate crisis could harm President Tinubu’s re-election bid, Abbas insisted that it is NNPP and Kwankwaso who will suffer politically. He described the NNPP’s internal issues and Kwankwaso’s leadership as embarrassing failures.
Highlighting Kwankwaso’s performance in the 2023 presidential election, Abbas noted that Kwankwaso received only 6.23% of the total votes, with most coming from Kano. He pointed out that Kwankwaso’s support was minimal outside the northwest region.
Abbas also mentioned that despite being from the southeast, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi outperformed Kwankwaso in several northern states during the last election. He asserted that the federal government’s interest in the Kano Emirate crisis is solely to uphold the rule of law and ensure peace in the state.
The APC statement reminded the NNPP of its previous electoral defeats and expressed confidence that the upcoming elections will see a similar outcome.
