Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that aviation regulators will visit the state next week to inspect the proposed Lekki International Airport ahead of its construction. The project, initially estimated at ₦171.64 billion (around $450 million) for its first phase, is slated to open in 2028 and is designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 on a 3,500-hectare site just 10 kilometers from the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Speaking during a guided tour of Alaro City and Universal One Development along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, accompanied by members of the Lagos State Executive Council and top government officials, Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to transformative infrastructural projects. He stressed that the airport would enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and attract global investments.
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that work on the Green Line Rail project, connecting Marina to Lekki, is soon to commence, with funding arrangements currently in progress. Praising the extensive infrastructure within Alaro City that has attracted significant investments, the governor urged investors to capitalize on the numerous opportunities emerging along the Lekki corridor.
Highlighting the historical significance of the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Sanwo-Olu credited President Bola Tinubu for its initiation two decades ago, a milestone that has spurred ongoing growth and development in the region.
Chairman Ayo Gbeleyi and Managing Director Yomi Ademola of Alaro City echoed these sentiments, commending the Lagos State Government’s partnerships with private investors, which have already led to the development of key projects such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the six-lane Lekki-Epe Expressway.
