The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibadan Zonal Directorate has secured the conviction of 35 individuals, including two brothers, Samuel Adedeji Adeboye and Charles Adedamola Adeboye, for their involvement in internet fraud.
The siblings, along with the other accused, were brought before Justices Ladiran Akintola, Bayo Taiwo, and O.S. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan. They faced charges ranging from impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, and possession of fraudulent documents, to aiding in the retention of proceeds from crime.
Samuel Adedeji Adeboye was charged with impersonating an individual named James Jonathan to defraud a victim, Wendy Rose, in June 2024. His brother, Charles Adedamola Adeboye, was accused of aiding internet fraudsters, including one Olowooye David (currently at large), by receiving N200,000 in fraudulent funds in July 2018.
All the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to their convictions. Samuel Adedeji Adeboye received a one-year prison sentence, with an option to pay a N100,000 fine. His brother, Charles Adedamola Adeboye, was sentenced to one year imprisonment, with an option to pay a N30,000 fine.
Other convicted individuals received varying sentences, including jail terms, community service, and fines. For instance, one defendant was sentenced to five months imprisonment or a N150,000 fine, while another was assigned five months of community service without an option of a fine.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of assets, including luxury vehicles such as Lexus, Toyota Camry, Mercedes Benz, and Acura cars, all proceeds of the fraud, to the federal government.
This conviction is part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime in the country.
