Hilary Umunna, Manager of Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), has expressed strong optimism about the positive impact of Enugu State’s new airline, Enugu Air, on the region’s economy. Speaking to newsmen over the weekend, Umunna said that the airline is poised to increase passenger traffic, bolster revenue for both the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the state, and create significant job opportunities within the aviation sector.

“We anticipate positive economic ripple effects for Enugu State and the South-East region, fostering trade, tourism, and business growth. One of FAAN’s goals is to sustain and expand partnerships that will make Enugu a strategic aviation hub,” Umunna said.

He added, “I am honoured and excited to welcome Enugu Air to Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Their presence enhances connectivity, boosts economic activities, and aligns with our vision of making Enugu the preferred aviation hub for the South-East.”

Umunna further highlighted the steps taken by AIIA Enugu to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) operational and regulatory standards. Enhancements in infrastructure, improved ground handling services, strengthened security measures, and compliance with international safety protocols have all been prioritized to ensure seamless and efficient operations for Enugu Air and its passengers.

Last Friday, the state took delivery of one of the aircraft designated for scheduled operations, marking another milestone in the development of Enugu’s aviation ecosystem.

As Enugu Air begins its operations, Umunna’s confidence underscores a broader strategic vision: to transform Enugu into a vital aviation hub that not only enhances connectivity but also drives trade, tourism, and overall economic growth in the South-East region of Nigeria.
