The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has reported a deadly attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group, on Sunday. The attack resulted in the death of two police officers, with three others sustaining serious knife injuries.
According to the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred at Wuse Junction near a traffic light, where police personnel were stationed. The attackers, armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices, launched an unprovoked assault on the officers, leaving two dead and three unconscious. Additionally, three police patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the confrontation.
“The proscribed organization attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives,” SP Adeh stated.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, condemned the violence and vowed to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. He assured the public that the situation is now under control and that normalcy has been restored in the area.
Several arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and the police have promised to provide further updates as investigations continue.
