The Federal Government has renewed its pledge to safeguard the Judiciary from manipulation and inducement, as stated by Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of new Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Abuja, Wike emphasized the government’s resolve to improve the working conditions of judicial officers as part of ensuring judicial independence.

The project, set to be completed in 15 months, will feature 40 houses for various categories of judges. Wike noted that improving the living conditions of judges is a priority for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which has taken legislative steps, including a constitutional amendment to allow judicial officers to retire at the age of 70.

“Judicial independence begins with addressing the tenure and conditions of service for judges,” Wike stated. He also highlighted that one of the president’s first actions in office was to approve an amendment to judicial salaries and allowances in 2024 to ensure they are adequately compensated.

Wike underscored the importance of housing in insulating the Judiciary from external pressures, saying, “Providing housing guarantees that judges will have a stable home upon retirement, reducing the risk of manipulation or interference.”

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, expressed gratitude to key government figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, for their support of the initiative aimed at reinforcing the Judiciary’s independence.
