Owerri, Nigeria – The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo State has passed a vote of no confidence on its chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, citing autocratic leadership, financial recklessness, and alleged collusion with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a press briefing in Owerri, party leaders accused Ihejiagwa of sidelining key stakeholders, including Senator Athan Achonu, the party’s major financier in the state, as well as the National Vice Chairman (South East), zonal chairmen, and elected lawmakers.

The SWC also alleged that Ihejiagwa unilaterally removed and replaced local party executives without consultation and actively suppressed internal democracy by blocking zonal chairmen from holding meetings.

A particularly controversial claim was that Ihejiagwa has been “settled” by the APC-led government and recently embarked on a Tinubu administration-sponsored pilgrimage to Israel—a move the SWC described as proof of his loyalty to the ruling party.

The SWC warned that under Ihejiagwa’s leadership, the Labour Party in Imo risks losing its relevance ahead of the 2027 elections, with increasing factionalization and mass defections to the APC.

As of press time, Ihejiagwa had not responded to the allegations, though a close associate said his camp was reviewing the situation and would issue a statement soon.
