The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission, led by Chairman Bar. Muhyi Rimingado, is actively addressing artificial price hikes of essential commodities to alleviate public hardship.
During a press conference, Rimingado revealed that numerous complaints from residents have been received regarding the recent hike in bread prices, despite a reduction in flour costs. In response, the commission is investigating the situation to determine if the price hikes are artificial.
Rimingado explained that initial talks with bakers indicated that bread prices were briefly reduced but quickly increased again due to a N5,000 rise in flour prices by dealers. The commission is now mediating between the bakers and flour dealers to ensure fairness and prevent undue hardship.
“Our dual mandate as an anti-corruption agency and ombudsman compels us to act against any measures causing unnecessary public suffering,” Rimingado stated. “We are committed to finding the root cause of these price increases and ensuring they are not artificially driven.”
He noted the commission’s ongoing efforts to monitor and regulate prices, having successfully intervened in similar situations during Ramadan, the COVID-19 pandemic, and periods of fuel scarcity. The commission is prepared to take all necessary legal actions to protect consumers and maintain fair pricing.
