In Kano, residents are grappling with a significant hike in charcoal prices, with the cost of a large bag rising from N4,000 to as much as N7,000. The spike has left many, especially those who rely on charcoal for cooking, in a difficult situation.

Mrs. Aisha Isa, a local housewife, highlighted the impact, noting that small quantities of charcoal that once sold for N50 are now priced at N150. Similarly, Mrs. Agnes John expressed concern that charcoal is becoming increasingly unaffordable for the average person, urging the government to subsidize cooking gas as an alternative.

Mr. Baba Jibril, who prefers using charcoal for its smoke-free quality, lamented that the rising prices are pushing him to consider reverting to firewood, which is also costly. Food vendor Hauwa Adamu mentioned that the high cost of kerosene and cooking gas has made charcoal a popular but increasingly expensive choice.

Charcoal dealers like Rabiu Abdullahi and Nura Garba cited transportation costs and insecurity as major factors driving the price increase, despite the growing demand. Abdullahi observed that a bag of charcoal, which now sells for N6,700, can last a family up to two months, making it a more economical option than kerosene. However, the price hike has strained many households, making it harder for residents to afford essential energy needs.
