Three dismissed officers of the Kwara State Police Command have been charged in court for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide following the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The officers—Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip—were arraigned on October 16, 2024, and are currently in prison custody awaiting further court proceedings.
The charges stem from their involvement in the death of Ishola, a 21-year-old National Diploma 2 student of Electrical/Electronics, who was allegedly killed during a student protest over fuel price hikes in Ilorin. Public outrage over the incident prompted Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order an investigation, leading to the transfer of the case to the police headquarters in Abuja.
Following a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary trial, the officers were found guilty of abandoning their posts, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully exercising authority. As a result, they were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective from October 4, 2024.
A police statement emphasized that this action underscores the commitment of IGP Egbetokun to maintaining justice, professionalism, and accountability within the force. “We are resolute in ensuring that officers conduct themselves with integrity, and any breach of ethical standards, particularly in cases leading to loss of life, will be met with a stiff response,” the statement read.
The police also expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, pledging continued support during this difficult time.
