As floodwaters from the Alau Dam begin to subside, displaced residents of Maiduguri are cautiously returning to assess their homes and belongings. Many had spent days outside, awaiting the receding waters.

Ali Bana, a resident of Gwange ward, explained, “We are just rushing to see what is left of our homes and salvage any property we can still use.”

However, not all homes are accessible. Musa Abdullahi of Gomari ward said, “My house is still flooded. It looks like we have more days to spend outside.”

According to a report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 239,000 people have been affected by the floods, with some residents relocating to the Muna IDP camp, which was already home to over 50,000 displaced persons.

The flood has also disrupted communication, power, and water supply in much of the town, leaving affected areas in distress.
