Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria are expressing growing frustration over escalating transportation fares, which they attribute to rising fuel prices. Many are reporting that these fare increases are severely impacting their daily lives and livelihoods.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, local inhabitants urged the Federal Government to implement a sustainable solution to the fuel price crisis, allowing transportation costs to return to manageable levels.

Taxi driver Mr. Bulus Dalong shared his concerns about the lengthy wait times to fill his cab. “Spending over five hours in the park is far from ideal. I often lose passengers due to the delays,” he explained. “While they complain about the fares, I have no choice but to charge more given the soaring fuel costs. The situation is dire, and we cannot continue this way.”

Dalong appealed for government intervention regarding fuel prices, hoping for relief for everyday citizens.

Bartender Mr. Charis Chuks echoed similar sentiments, noting that he was struggling to make ends meet even before the fare hikes. “I never thought transportation would become a burden. With my salary already stretched thin, this new challenge is overwhelming. I urge the government for assistance,” he said.

Nurse Miss Jumai Elabor revealed that transportation costs now consume half her monthly salary, leaving her with little to cover other essentials. “I can barely afford to get to work, and the delays in filling cabs make me late,” she lamented.

Civil servant Mrs. Nkiruka Abang described the fare increase as exacerbating her family’s financial difficulties. “The state of the nation is alarming. People are hungry, and transportation shouldn’t add to our woes. I hope for swift action from the government to improve our circumstances,” she stated.

Corps member Judah Ubeh noted that the transportation issues have affected his work attendance, though he expressed gratitude for his understanding employer, who has permitted him to take days off.

Carpenter Mr. Julius Odafe voiced his concerns about the affordability of transport, stating, “The hike in fares is making it increasingly difficult for many of us to conduct our daily activities. I sincerely hope the government addresses this urgent issue. It’s becoming quite distressing, and I worry about the implications for our society. Nevertheless, I remain hopeful for a brighter future for all citizens.”
