Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent figure in Osun State’s All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent Governor Ademola Adeleke from proceeding with the local government elections scheduled for Saturday.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Thursday, Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker and member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), argued that there was no leadership vacuum in the state’s 30 local councils. He emphasized that holding the election would be both unnecessary and potentially dangerous.
Citing the recent violence that claimed six lives and left many injured at various council areas on Monday, Oyintiloye warned of the risk of further bloodshed if the elections go ahead. “The state government should not endanger the lives of residents in the name of politics,” he said, praising security agencies for their swift response in restoring peace.
He suggested that instead of conducting the election, the state government should seek redress at the Supreme Court if dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s decision, which reinstated APC chairmen and councillors across the local councils.
“All we want in the state is peace, and anything that can jeopardize the peaceful atmosphere should be avoided,” he added, stressing the importance of respecting the rule of law that brought Governor Adeleke to power.
Oyintiloye reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to peace and urged Osun residents to remain law-abiding. He also extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the recent unrest.
With tension simmering, stakeholders are looking to President Tinubu’s response, as his influence could play a critical role in averting a potential crisis in Osun State.
