An artisan, Sunday Ejoh, was sentenced to six months in correctional custody by a Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun State, for stealing three tubers of yams. Ejoh, who specializes in aluminum work, was charged with theft on Monday.
The police prosecutor, ASP Jacob Akitunde, informed the court that the offense took place on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in the Okinni area of Egbedore Local Government, Osun State. The stolen yams, valued at N3,000, belonged to a resident named Olawole Durojaye. Ejoh’s actions were found to be in violation of Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.
Ejoh, who appeared without legal representation, pleaded guilty to the charge. In his defense, he told the court, “I am hungry, and I have a family.” The police also recovered a cutlass and slippers from him at the time of his arrest.
In delivering the judgment, Magistrate M.A. Olatunji sentenced Ejoh to six months imprisonment but provided an option for the convict to pay a fine of N25,000.
