Ghana’s President John Mahama has explained why he recently visited Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Mahama said the visit had two main goals. First, he wanted to thank President Tinubu for attending his inauguration on January 7, 2025. “I came to thank him for the honor of attending my swearing-in ceremony,” Mahama said.

Second, Mahama briefed Tinubu on his meetings with military leaders from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. These talks focused on improving security and stability in the Sahel region, which remains a key concern for West Africa. “I updated him on my visits to the Sahel countries and discussed some of the issues we need to work on,” he added.

President Tinubu welcomed Mahama’s visit and praised the effort to strengthen ties between the African Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Sahel countries. “I’m pleased with the steps he’s taking to build a stronger connection between the AES countries and ECOWAS,” Tinubu said.

Both leaders agreed on the need for continued cooperation to improve security and boost economic opportunities in the region. The visit reinforced the strong relationship between Ghana and Nigeria and their shared goal of promoting peace and prosperity in West Africa.
