At least six people have reportedly lost their lives in a renewed assault by suspected armed herdsmen on Ayilomo, a community in the Logo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State. The attack, which began on Friday evening and extended into Saturday, follows a similar assault in Anyiin just two days prior, where over 15 lives were claimed.
Local sources indicate that the violence erupted around 6 p.m. on Friday when the attackers, believed to be herdsmen from neighboring Taraba State, opened fire on residents returning from their farms. “The people had just returned from their farms when the attackers stormed the community and opened fire,” one source, who wished to remain anonymous, reported.
As panic spread, villagers fled their homes. Security forces, including military and police, arrived on the scene, leading to a temporary retreat by the attackers. However, three individuals were killed and several others injured during the initial onslaught.
The attackers returned on Saturday afternoon, this time in greater numbers, causing further chaos by firing indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze. This second wave of violence resulted in three additional fatalities and inflicted damage on the Ayilomo Police Station.
“The farming community is now deserted, with residents fleeing to neighboring areas in search of safety,” the local source added, highlighting the dire situation faced by women and children who are in urgent need of assistance.
Clement Ukav, Chairman of the Logo Local Government Council, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts are underway to curtail the attacks. Attempts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, for additional confirmation were unsuccessful.
