The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is ramping up preparations for the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, August 2025. This fresh poll comes after the Supreme Court annulled the 2024 election, and the state’s electoral commission has been under intense scrutiny following the resignation of three commissioners and calls for investigations by the EFCC and ICPC into its financial dealings.

In a press statement issued in Port Harcourt, Commissioner Tamunotonye Tobins, in charge of Media and Civic Education, confirmed that RSIEC has secured essential documents from the INEC Headquarters—namely, the updated Register of Voters for Rivers State and the current list of Registered Political Parties (Letter No. INEC/RV/S/VR/494/155, March 2025).

“Our resolve is to conduct a credible, free and fair election for the people of Rivers State,” Tobins assured, adding that these preparations form part of ongoing efforts to restore public confidence in the electoral process.

The commission’s proactive measures come amid heightened political tension following the state House of Assembly’s summons of RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), and top staff. Despite these challenges, RSIEC remains determined to deliver a transparent and effective poll in August 2025.
