The Senate has approved the restoration of Aniocha North II State Constituency in Delta State in line with the Supreme Court judgment in Suit No. SC/129/2019. The Upper Chamber has directed INEC to implement this resolution in time for the next Delta State House of Assembly election, as mandated by Section 115 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Senator Ned Nwoko (APC, Delta North), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparation and Repatriation, sponsored the motion, highlighting that a court ruling in 2017 by the Court of Appeal ordered the restoration of the constituency—a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court on November 29, 2019. Despite INEC’s initial commitment in 2020, no further steps were taken, leaving the constituency’s residents disenfranchised.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the motion and urged the House of Representatives to concur, emphasizing the binding nature of the Supreme Court decision. He directed the National Assembly to formally notify INEC to ensure compliance before the 2027 elections and called on other states facing similar issues to seek redress in court.
This resolution reinforces the Senate’s commitment to upholding judicial decisions and ensuring proper representation for the people of Aniocha North II.
