Heavy rainfall has led to devastating flooding in Niger State, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and impacting 529 communities across 19 local governments. Affected areas include Mokwa, Katcha, Lavun, and several others.
The floods have ravaged hectares of farmland, threatening a potential food crisis as the state grapples with the aftermath. Abdullahi Baba Aarah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the losses and assured that the government is implementing measures to mitigate future disasters.
This year has seen particularly severe flooding in West Africa, displacing over 460,000 individuals region-wide, with Borno State also suffering significant casualties. Aarah reported that the flooding in Niger State has destroyed 246 school infrastructures and severely damaged 18 bridges and 80 culverts, complicating communication and accessibility for residents.
As the state braces for more rainfall, immediate steps have been approved for food procurement, and the Emergency Agency is seeking assistance from stakeholders and international partners to support those affected.
