In a forceful rebuttal to circulating allegations, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara has distanced himself from militant groups reportedly threatening the federal government amid the state’s ongoing political crisis. The governor’s statement, issued on Monday from Port Harcourt and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, sharply refuted claims linking him to any militant activities.
“Virtually all the fake videos have been linked to alleged militant groups in the State, with the creators of such content trying very hard to connect them to supporters of Governor Siminialayi Fubara,” the statement read. Fubara’s spokesperson noted that local communities where explosions had been rumored are quick to dismiss such claims, emphasizing that all critical oil and gas facilities in the area remain safe, secure, and fully operational.
The governor reiterated his longstanding commitment to peace and security in Rivers State. “For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Siminialayi Fubara has no link to any militant group, does not contemplate any such association, and has no reason to encourage any criminal group or elements, anywhere in the State or Niger Delta, to undertake any action inimical to the peace of the people or the safety and security of oil and gas facilities,” the statement declared.
Fubara also warned those behind the disruptive misinformation campaign and potential acts of violence, cautioning, “Governor Fubara vehemently warns purveyors of violence and economic sabotage to steer clear of the state, and avoid any attempt to use his name or capitalise on the present political crisis to foment trouble in the State.” He further called on bloggers and social media influencers to halt their efforts to create an atmosphere of tension and chaos, noting that such actions only risk derailing progress in the region.
The suspended governor’s comments come amid heightened sensitivity surrounding Rivers State, where political turmoil has often been exploited by various groups to further their agendas. Local security agencies have been urged to clamp down on the spread of fake videos and misleading reports that not only sow discord but also cast the state in a negative light internationally.
As Rivers State grapples with its political and security challenges, Governor Fubara’s unequivocal denials and stern warnings underscore his focus on ensuring stability and protecting vital infrastructures, with a clear message that any attempts to destabilize the state will be met with a determined response from both state and federal security agencies.
