The Taraba State Advisory Committee on Local Government Autonomy has sought to alleviate concerns among traditional rulers regarding the recently granted financial autonomy for the state’s 16 local government areas.
During a consultative meeting in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Peter Diah, the Committee Chairman, emphasized that this autonomy will enhance, rather than diminish, the influence of traditional institutions. He described the arrangement as a mutually beneficial scenario that enables monarchs to actively participate in decision-making and local development.
Diah highlighted that local government autonomy will empower traditional rulers to play a crucial role in fostering community welfare and development. He underscored the importance of their involvement in governance, proposing a collaborative approach to address specific local challenges.
The committee has introduced a framework aimed at ensuring traditional institutions are integral to grassroots initiatives. Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, Chief of Mambilla, Dr. Shehu Baju II, expressed readiness to embrace this framework and thanked Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas for recognizing their contributions.
This initiative follows the Governor’s establishment of the advisory committee in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy in Taraba State.
