In a deeply regrettable incident, Inspector Abel Isah Dickson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has passed away following a confrontation with two fellow officers regarding the handling of confiscated materials from a suspect.

The recovered items, reported to include medications and a sum of money, became the subject of a dispute that tragically escalated.

The two involved colleagues, Assistant Superintendent Apata Oluwaseun Odunayo and Inspector Ogbuji Titu Tochukwu, have now been formally charged with culpable homicide and presented before a court in Sokoto.

Reacting to the incident, EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa expressed his firm commitment to ensuring that the responsible officers face the full consequences of their actions.

Bawa declared an unwavering dedication to justice, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of accountability.

Providing further details, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, delivered a press briefing in Abuja, confirming the distressing occurrence.

Uwujaren also revealed that the implicated officers have been suspended pending further investigations.

Uwujaren stated, “We have convened this morning to apprise you of an unfortunate event that took place at our Sokoto Zonal Command, which is suspected to have resulted in the demise of one of our promising officers, Inspector Abel Isah Dickson.”

The officer tragically passed away on May 7, 2023, at Usmanu DanFodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, where he was undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the altercation two days prior.

The altercation arose from a disagreement between the officers regarding the protocols governing the custody of items belonging to a detained suspect. The Commission unequivocally condemns such conduct.

This disheartening incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for professionalism and restraint within law enforcement agencies.

The EFCC, through a rigorous internal investigation, is committed to upholding its core values and ensuring that justice prevails in this case.
