Tragedy struck Umudioka village in Awka, Anambra State, last Sunday when 83-year-old community leader Chief Michael Nwobu was brutally murdered in his residence on Okolobu Street. The killing occurred while his family had left for church.
According to his first son, Mr. Nnaemeka Nwobu, based in South Korea, the elder Nwobu, who was due to testify in a High Court case over a land dispute scheduled for March 5, was ambushed and stabbed several times on March 2. “I suspect that they hired some cultists to kill my father. The killer almost cut off his head,” he said, demanding justice from police and the government.
Another family member, Nnaemeka Kene Joseph, suggested that the motive might be internal, pointing to possible involvement of disgruntled relatives and tenants who had been present at the time of the incident. The Awka police command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The community mourns the loss of a man known for his commitment to justice, and calls for swift action to bring those responsible to account.
