Stanley Nwoke, the youth leader-elect of Umusi Olokwa community in Owerri West LGA, Imo State, was killed in a violent attack on Saturday night, shortly after winning the January 3, 2025, election.
The attackers also injured four of Nwoke’s siblings and set nine houses on fire. Tensions over the election results are believed to have triggered the attack.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, visited the community on Sunday, condemning the violence and assuring that justice would be served.
State Police spokesman Henry Okoye said preliminary investigations point to a faction led by Chinaza Nwachukwu and others, who are currently at large. Four suspects have been arrested as the investigation continues.
Danjuma assured that normalcy has been restored, with security tightened to prevent further unrest. He urged community leaders to resolve disputes peacefully, warning that violence would not be tolerated.
The deceased’s body has been taken to the morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
